Scripture Activity

A few weeks ago I was listening to a podcast, when one of the podcasters starts to quote a scripture and the other one say’s no that’s not from that book, because that verse was our house motto, because it was our house number and the verse was from…

That got me thinking, what a great idea and I started looking in every book chapter 5 verse 08 to see what we could  adapt as a house motto. Some books it was genealogies, others didn’t make sense without the verses around it and some were great, but not overly motto-esque (like Proverbs 5 is about avoiding sex outside of marriage… good lessons, not really something to embroider on a pillow though). And in the end I had a page and a half of beautiful and inspiring scripture.

In this exercise, I discovered how incredibly fun and enlightening it can be to read just snippets of the bible. Sometimes it is all really daunting to me and I have to put the good book to the side for a while.  In just looking for one verse, I read from several books I have not made it to and in some cases read much more that just the intended verse, because I felt drawn in. It wasn’t daunting, I knew I could stop at any time and I didn’t have to read a whole book. It was so refreshing.

I was inspired to look for more verses that we could surround ourselves with that might have more meaning than just we like them. Maybe taking them on as a challenge to try and embody and emulate Christ. I took each of our birthdays, month and day, and repeated the process. Then Ian and I were able to talk about the verses that I wrote down and pick personal and family quotes to help us on our path. Below are the ones that we took on, what verses inspire you and your family?

508 House motto: Ephesians 5:08 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children in the light.

Ian 5/13: James 5:13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing Psalms.

Myself 5/19: Romans 5:19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

John 1/08: Haggai 1:08 “Go up on the mountain and cut wood and build the house, and I will take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the Lord.

What are some versus that tie into your life?
